We’re super pumped to have joined the Avery Recycling Programme!
Thousands of metric tonnes of label waste ends up in landfill every year. Made from paper and silicone, our label backing (the paper that our labels come on) will now be processed and split overseas and then recycled into tissue paper. We love that this initiative is both traceable and measurable so we have peace of mind that Forty Thieves label backing isn’t getting lost in transit.
1. What is the Avery Dennison liner recycling programme?
Started by global leaders in materials and label manufacturing; Avery Dennison has partnered with waste management specialists in a number of countries including New Zealand to collect and recycle liner waste.
2. What exactly are glassine liners and what are they made from?
The colourful labels on our jars arrive to our factory in big rolls attached to white backing or ‘ glassine liners.’ Glassine is a smooth and glossy paper that is resistant to water and grease. Typical label liners are non-recyclable because of silicone coating.
3. How does this recycling process work?
Once our jars are labelled and ready to go, we’re left with piles of label liners. Rather than going to landfill, this is now bundled up, collected and transported to a recycling hub overseas. In the recycling facility, the white glassine liner is combined with other materials to produce tissue paper. This tissue is also recyclable (yay!) and used for clothing and footwear packaging.
4. Why has Forty Thieves chosen to join this programme?
With a passion for sustainability, we always strive to select materials that are recyclable and/or made from recycled materials. This includes using glass jars, made from 90% recycled glass and FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council®) approved paper labels, made from 30% post-consumer waste. By joining this programme, we’re moving another step forward towards zero waste!
